What does designation mean?

When an area is designated as part of a National Park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) it is given a special status in law to help protect and manage it.

There are different arrangements for National Parks and AONBs. Although we are only recommending National Park designations, the arrangements for AONBs are provided to explain the important differences between these designations.
